Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD) can significantly impact your daily life—causing discomfort and interfering with how you eat, speak, and even sleep. If you’re experiencing jaw pain or clicking, you’re not alone. Many individuals in Chapel Hill and beyond deal with this common yet often misunderstood condition. Fortunately, effective TMJ treatments are available, and the Studio G Aesthetic & Family Dentistry team are trusted TMJ specialists.
Treatments for TMJ Pain
TMJ pain can range from mild and occasional to severe and chronic. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms. For some patients, conservative, non-invasive therapies can bring significant relief. These may include:
- Custom Oral Appliances – Also known as splints or night guards, these devices help reduce clenching or grinding (bruxism) and properly align the jaw.
- Physical Therapy – Targeted exercises and stretches can improve jaw mobility and reduce tension over time.
- Medication – Over-the-counter pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, or muscle relaxants may be prescribed to manage pain.
- Lifestyle Modifications – Avoiding gum chewing, reducing stress, and maintaining good posture can help alleviate symptoms.
- Advanced Therapies – In more severe cases, treatments such as Botox injections, trigger point therapy, or even surgical options may be considered.
Determining which treatment option will work best for you may take some trial and error. For some patients, a combination of one or more treatment approaches is most effective. For instance, an oral appliance worn at night and lifestyle modifications might deliver the best results.

TMJ FAQs
How is TMJ disorder diagnosed?
We will perform a physical exam, review your symptoms, and take imaging X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to assess the joint’s condition.
Can TMJ go away on its own?
Mild cases sometimes resolve without treatment, especially with stress reduction and rest. However, persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated.
Is surgery always necessary?
There’s no need to worry. Surgery is typically a last resort in TMJ treatment. Most patients respond well to non-surgical therapies, which provide relief without invasive procedures.
Are There Any TMJ Exercises I Can Start With Now?
Yes! Simple exercises can help reduce jaw tension and improve mobility. Try these at home:
- Jaw Stretch: Gently open your mouth as wide as comfortable, hold for a few seconds, then slowly close.
- Side-to-Side Movement: Place a pencil between your teeth and move your jaw side to side.
- Resisted Mouth Opening: Place your thumb under your chin and gently open your mouth while applying slight pressure.
Always perform exercises slowly and stop if pain increases. For the best results, consult one of our specialists, or a physical therapist experienced with TMJ to ensure you’re doing the right exercises for your condition.
What Causes My TMJ?
There isn’t always one clear cause of TMJ, but several contributing factors include:
- Jaw injury or trauma
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Arthritis in the joint
- Misaligned bite or jaw structure
- Stress-related muscle tension
Identifying the underlying cause is key to effective treatment.
Are There Any Long-Term Complications of Untreated TMJ Pain?
Yes—ignoring TMJ issues can lead to worsening symptoms over time, including:
- Chronic jaw pain and stiffness
- Limited jaw movement or locking
- Increased risk of dental problems from grinding
- Headaches, migraines, and sleep disturbances
- Psychological effects such as anxiety or depression due to chronic pain
- Exhaustion or daytime sleepiness due to lack of restful sleep at night
Early intervention is essential to prevent complications and improve your quality of life.

Patient Review by J. Fuller D
Before my time spent with Dr. S. Hart, I possessed an intense phobia of dentists. It was the reason my dental problems were many. I could never imagine the necessary procedures were possible without complete sedation. That was not the case. The staff was unbelievable....I never had to wait, I was given reminders before each visit, and was treated with care and respect. Remember I was a worst case patient. It is difficult to praise the staff, from Yesi to the hygienists, to Dr. Hart, enough. Dr. Hart made himself available to me 24/7. I have never been extended this courtesy in my life by any doctor. Five stars across the board.

As if probably common, I hate going to the dentist, or so I thought. In fact, I hated going to the dentist so much that I avoided it for years before finding Dr. G and knowing that I needed to book and finally get an evaluation and work done. The entire process could not have been any easier. Libby and Dr. G are professionals with heart. I was so scared to be at the dentist that I literally cried my first visit and Libby gave me a hug and instantly made me feel better. Turns out I didn't need as much work as I feared and the work that needed to be done was virtually painless. Dr. G is a pro at giving numbing shots and talks you through everything. I have never felt more at ease. I am looking forward to my next appointing, too!

Everyone is friendly, professional and accomodating. There are many dental offices much closer to me as I live in Graham, but the doctors and staff make it worthwhile to go there. Very happy with the care I get.

I was scheduled to see Dr. Hart who has been my regular dentist for a number of years. Dr. Hart was not there on the day of my appointment. I saw Dr. Hardin, who recommended that I have a procedure. I had undergone a procedure on the same tooth by Dr. Houston (in Dr. Hart's former office) two years ago. When I asked that I see Dr. Hart to perform the procedure, I was told that Dr. Hardin would perform these procedures going forward. I was not given an estimate of the cost. I intend to write to Dr. Hart; if he is not to be my dentist, I will request a referral to a dentist in Raleigh, where I live.
