Scaling & Root Planing

Deeper Teeth Cleaning Chapel Hill

The initial stage of treatment is usually a thorough cleaning that may include scaling to remove plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line.

The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. In some cases, the occlusion (bite) may require adjustment.

Antibiotics or irrigation with anti-microbials (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be recommended to help control the growth of bacteria that create toxins and cause periodontitis. In some cases, Dr. Ghaffarpour, Dr. Dakermanji or Dr. Yarborough may place antibiotic fibers in the periodontal pockets after scaling and planing. This may be done to control infection and to encourage normal healing.

When deep pockets between teeth and gums are present, it is difficult for the hygienist. to thoroughly remove plaque and tartar. Patients can seldom if ever, keep these pockets clean and free of plaque. Consequently, surgery may be needed to restore periodontal health.

Patient Review by Jennifer B

As if probably common, I hate going to the dentist, or so I thought. In fact, I hated going to the dentist so much that I avoided it for years before finding Dr. G and knowing that I needed to book and finally get an evaluation and work done. The entire process could not have been any easier. Libby and Dr. G are professionals with heart. I was so scared to be at the dentist that I literally cried my first visit and Libby gave me a hug and instantly made me feel better. Turns out I didn't need as much work as I feared and the work that needed to be done was virtually painless. Dr. G is a pro at giving numbing shots and talks you through everything. I have never felt more at ease. I am looking forward to my next appointing, too!
